Heritage Tourism in Jammu and Kashmir

Heritage of Jammu

When on a visit to Jammu & Kashmir, both Jammu and Kashmir have their separate history, sites and architecture. So, one should not confuse themselves of both being the same.

Talking about architectural gems of Jammu, the Amar Mahal Palace stands at the very top of that list. Constructed with red sand stone and standing on a hill, this place gives the best views of Jammu. Now converted into a museum, which holds a throne made up of 120kg of pure gold.

The Bahu Fort of Jammu is supposedly 3000 years old, built by Raja Bahu Lochan. The temple houses a temple dedicated Maa Kali, which is now a famous pilgrimage site in Jammu and is known by Bawey Wali Maa Temple.

Nestled on the bank of Chenab River, Akhnoor Fort is an integral part of Jammu’s heritage. Built in the 19th century, this fort is now a national monument. After being under the protection of Archeological Society of India, the archeologists were able to find the traces of Harappan Civilization from this fort.

Heritage of Kashmir

The place that is famous for being called ‘Paradise on Earth’ also harbors some beautiful pieces of history in it. Gardens, ruins, temples, mosques, every piece of architecture has a story behind it.

Among the top heritage sites of Kashmir there is an abode that is dedicated to fairies, by the name of Pari Mahal. Lying on the edge of Zabarwan Mountain, this 16th century monument is a perfect example of Mughal architectural style.

One said it right that ‘Mughals didn’t only spend their time conquering and ruling but also spent some of their time in building beautiful gardens. Home to 6 Mughal Gardens like Shalimar and Nishat, these gardens give a glimpse of rich Mughal history and their creative architectural minds.

On the Hari Parbat is the renowned Hari Parbar Fort built by an Afghan Governor ‘Atta Mohammad Khan’. This is the only fort where you will see comprised structures dedicated to Hindu, Sikhs and Muslim. The Fort also features a temple that is dedicated to Goddess Parvati by the name of Sharika Temple.
